Employee Leaves

In less than a century, employees have gone from having no paid time off to being entitled to various paid leaves and public holidays. Employees in all countries are entitled to various types of leave for various reasons. To comply with the law, employers must understand paid leave rules. Besides this, many progressive companies now provide additional leave options to employees.

 

Types of Employee Leave

Employers must provide minimum leave per federal and state laws. However, leave policies vary greatly between employers. The type of business is important because different sectors have different labour laws. The Factories Act of 1948 governs factories in India. Other than factories, every state has enacted the Shops & Commercial Establishments Act. Companies provide additional leave options besides the mandatory leave.

 

Paid Leave (PL)/ Annual Leave (AL) (AL)

Earned Leave is so named because you earn it for working days. Vacation Leave (VL), Privilege Leave (PL), Flexi Holiday (FH), or Annual Leave (AL). The EL leave type is typically used for personal reasons like vacation or non-holiday festivals. A week or more of leave is considered “long leave.” Because extended leave can disrupt work, it should be planned ahead of time and communicated to the team or manager.

 

Casual Leave (CL)

Aside from EL, some employers offer a leave called Casual Leave (CL). Unlike EL, which are planned leaves, these leave can be used for personal emergencies.

 

Sick Pay (SL)

Sick or injured employees are entitled to Medical Leaves (ML). Sick Leave is another type of legal leave. Because these leaves are easily abused, employers usually require a medical certificate if the leave exceeds two or three days.

Paid Leave

Marriage Leave is a special leave provided by some companies for newlyweds. Unlike in a few countries like Malta and Vietnam, marriage leave is not a legal right in most countries, including India. The marriage-leave grant is for 1-15 days. However, most employers provide three days of marriage leave.

 

Paternity Leave

Leave granted to expectant fathers after childbirth. It is a leave for fathers to care for their newborns and mothers.

 

Bereavement Leave

Bereavement Leave is granted when a family member dies or a loved one passes away. This leave is for attending funeral services, personal matters, and most importantly, grieving. Work on a weekend or holiday due to the urgency of the deliverables is compensated with a compensatory day off. Because these leaves are dependent on business needs, they are granted on a case by case basis. Getting comp-off leave is a process.

 

Leave Without Pay (LWP)
