Employee Provident Fund (EPF) Passbook
Employee Provident Fund (EPF) passbook is a statement total contribution amount lying with employee provident fund organisation (EPFO) under various heads like employee and employer’s contribution towards provident fund, pension contribution. Monthly contribution to the provident fund gets reflected in EPF passbook.
EPF passbook is helpful to view the provident fund balance transferred from one employee to another. As EPF passbook are generated UAN-wise.
EPF passbook contains details like Establishment Name, EPF office name, Universal Account Number (UAN) of the employee, total corpus amount of employee share and employer share.

Employee’s Provident Fund (EPF) Number
Employee of registered entity are allotted a EPF number. PF number is an alphanumeric representing the state, regional office, establishment, and the PF member code.
Universal Account Number (UAN)
UAN is a unique number allotted to all employee working with PF registered organisation. UAN is 12 digit unique number of an employee. This UAN remains same even if an employee change multiple organisation
Provident Fund Contribution (PF)
Employee contributes 12% as PF contribution includes Basic pay, Dearness Allowance, retaining allowances, if any.
An employee may opt to contribute 100% of basic pay. This is optional at the discretion of employess. Further, this is over and above 12% of mandatory contribution.
Interest on Employee’s Provident Fund (EPF) FY 2020-21
Interest on Employee’s Provident Fund (EPF) for FY 2020-21 is 8.5%.
The employee’s provident fund organisation (EPFO) declared to pay interest on EPF for the financial year 2019-20 in two instalments. First instalment of Rs 8.15% and 0.35% in second instalment. It was supposed to pay first instalment immediately on the date of announcement ie first week of September, 2020.
But as on the date of updation of this article 21st November 2020, as our information source, interest on EPF for FY 2019-20 is still no credit to the PF account of employees.
Registering on the EPFO Portal
PF subscriber needs to activate Universal Account Number (UAN).
Activate Universal Account Number (UAN)
Subscriber can follow the following steps to activate their Universal Account Number (UAN).
Step-1: Visit Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) Member e-SEWA portal. Click here
Step-2: Click on Activate UAN
Step-3: After clicking on Activate UAN , a new screen will appear as follows. Please enter all mandatory details (marked with * red asterisk) like Name, Date of Birth, Mobile Number, Captcha code along with inputs like UAN or Member ID, Aadhar number, PAN details
Step-4: After filling the form. Click on ‘Get Authorization Pin’. Thereafter, new screen will appear prompting to verify the details entered. Further, an OTP via SMS will be sent to your mobile.
Step-5: Enter the OTP and click on ‘Validate OTP and activate UAN’.
Once your UAN is activated, you will receive an SMS containing your password. Use this password to login to your account. You can change your password after logging in.
Downloading EPF Passbook
Once logging creditionals are created, thereafter we can download EPF statement as follows:
Step-1: Visit Employees’ Provident Fund Passbook and Claim Status portal. Click here
Step-2: Please your username [ie your Universal Account Number (UAN)], Password, Captcha and finally click on “LOGIN”
Step-3: After login, select the member ID to view your passbook.
Thereafter passbook can be downloaded in PDF format.
Forget Login Password
Subscriber can reset their password by visit Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) Member e-SEWA portal. Click here
Contents of the Passbook
Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) member passbook contains the following details
- Establishment ID/Name
- Member ID/Name
- Office Name
- Universal Account Number (UAN)
- Total amount of Employees Share of provident fund
- Total amount of Employer Share of provident fund
- Line item wise contribution made for each month is recorded with details of deposits, withdrawal, and pension contribution
- Interest amount received
- Monthly contribution
- Date of printing passbook is mentioned to reflect the period for transactions

In order to download the EPF passbook statement, Subscriber must have registered account on the Member e-SEWA portal (Click here). If you are registering for the first time, then you can view your passbook only 6 hours after registration.
